The Oct. 8 Baptist Press article, “Feeding hungry hearts under Vegas lights” discusses how a local church uses funds provided by the North American Mission Board’s World Hunger Fund to feed the homeless in the Las Vegas area. The article focuses on how Las Vegas’s Rushing Wind Church serves a meal to the homeless every Wednesday night. Many recipients of this ministry are drug addicts but since receiving food on Wednesday nights, have begun to attend the church’s weekly services and radically changed their life priorities. The article focuses on many of these ex-drug addicts who are now volunteers with the meal ministry.
This article shows the effects the World Hunger Fund is having across the country. The Georgia Baptist Convention sponsors the World Hunger Fund and 20 percent of the Georgia funds go to the North American Mission Board’s domestic World Hunger Fund, which is then distributed to needed state funds, such as the Southern Nevada Baptist Association as described in the article.
Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church Children’s Ministry is currently participating in raising money for this fund. Many times churches are not able to see the effects of such fundraisers. It is great to already hear success stories from the money that has been raised!

LOVE IT! I’ve heard of several ministry efforts based solely on the people in Las Vegas. Sometimes I think I focus too much on what is going on in third world countries overseas that I miss the need in my own country. Thanks for the reminder, Beth!

I love hearing stories like this. The church making a difference in the local community is always great but when it reaches national attention, you know that they’re being impactful. I hope that more follow their lead.

Very good idea with the dinner. You would never think that giving someone food once a week can do a ’cause and effect’ of getting them to change their whole life!
